A group of Hmong refugees who left St. Paul in June arrived in Washington, D.C. on August 19th, 2004, many of them on foot. Some walked the entire 1100 miles journey; others joined en route. MPR’s David Molpus talks with two involved in march.
The march, which organizers dubbed the "Long Walk for Freedom," is intended to raise awareness of alleged human rights abuses committed against Hmong people still living in Laos, and pressure the U.S. Government to ban imports from Laos. The marchers met with staff members representing Minnesota's Republican Senator Norm Coleman and Democratic Wisconsin Senator Russ Feingold.
