MPR’s Greta Cunningham interviews Dick Moesing, who recounts his brother-in-law's story of losing a hammer during a round of dome repairs on the Cathedral of St. Paul in the 1950's. During 2002 restoration, that hammer has reappeared, and being given back to the family.
Moesing's sister was married to Lloyd John Holden, a carpenter who was not afraid of heights and volunteered to climb the dome to work on it. He died in 1995, but the story of Holden's lost hammer lived on. Moesing says his brother-in-law was working way up in the top of the dome when the hammer slipped out of his hands.
Officials at the Cathedral of St. Paul are marking next step in the building's restoration with a party. People who attend the so-called "Sign Onto History" event can leave their signatures on a scroll that will be put in the dome cross. The party also includes the presentation of a hammer to Holden’s family.
