June 29, 2000 - Forty-three very old cars roll into Duluth tonight - the 59th day of a gruelling road rally running dozens of vintage cars all the way around the world. The Around The World in 80 Days Motor Challenge is on its North American leg, bound for a July finish back in London. The crews include eccentric Englishmen; an Irish pair in a classic Mustang; and a woman who grew up in Eveleth ...now circling the world in a classic Buick station wagon. Minnesota Public Radio's Bob Kelleher reports: { It's easier to tell you what they're doing than why they're doing it. Dozens of classic cars left London's Tower Bridge May first, for an 80-day challenge to circle the globe. You might think the drivers would choose sturdy SUV's for their difficult trek ... but not at all. They're driving old, classic, often rare automobiles never intended for endless hours of dirt and gravel; mountains, and deserts. Duluth's Tim Winker is helping publicize the North American leg of the rally. He says the ralliers aren't your typical motorists.

December 14, 1999 - A Minnesota group is releasing a report documenting the damage off-road vehicles cause in the state's wild areas. The report by Minnesotans for Responsible Recreation calls for new limits on the vehicles and a renewed emphasis on enforcing existing OHV laws.
December 7, 1999 - A Black Bear sow named WhiteHeart is nestling into a Den in the Superior National Forest near Ely, preparing to snooze away the winter months. There's a good chance that Whiteheart will give birth to cubs this winter, and if she does, there's a good chance you'll be able to watch the event on the world wide web.
November 9, 1999 - Busloads of protesters are in Madison today, rallying against a proposed high-voltage power line that would slice across North Western and Central Wisconsin. The transmission line from the Twin Ports to Wassau is the biggest utility project proposed for Wisconsin in memory, but it's hit a wall of opposition from concerned residents.
November 5, 1999 - Deer hunters are always scheming how to outwit their nervous prey. Some perch for endless chilly hours hidden high up a tree. Others brazenly barge through the woods, to chase the skittish white-tails into a fellow hunter's target range. Some go so far as to douse themselves in doe urine. And a few will be turning to a small battery operated device that draws in the deer with the flik of a fake tail.
October 11, 1999 - MPR’s Bob Kelleher reports that an Ohio man is recovering in an Upper Michigan hospital, after falling overboard from a lake freighter and having to swim five miles in the frigid waters of Lake Superior.
October 1, 1999 - A group of Northern Minnesota Loggers says it will file suit today against the U-S Forest Service and two environmental groups. The loggers claim the group's religious views are unduly influencing forest management decisions.
August 25, 1999 - The US Forest Service will be able to side-step some regulations, to remove dead timber near Northeastern Minnesota's Gunflint Trail. Officials are worried about the danger of fire from millions of trees downed in a Fourth of July Storm. The waiver allows the Forest Service to go ahead with salvage timber sales with an abbreviated environmental review process.
