SPEAKER 1: From Minnesota Public Radio, here's a special moment from our past 30 years. The 1968 State Democratic Convention was an historic occasion, featuring a race between senators, Eugene McCarthy and Hubert Humphrey, and it posed a unique challenge to two young radio men, Bill Kling and Gary Eichten.
SPEAKER 2: Both of Minnesota's senators, both DFLers were running for president against each other. It was quite a deal, and Bill decided that we should do this live. Well, of course, we'd never done anything like that. We had no equipment for it. But Bill said, well, let's go down to the Cities, down to Saint Paul. And we'll set up shop there, and we'll broadcast this. And so he had-- Bill had some technical knowledge, kind of a half-baked engineer. And I was kind of a half-baked announcer. So off we went and set up shop. And by golly, it worked.
