MPR’s Chris Roberts reports on a potent mixture of visual arts, drama and jazz form at a Penumbra Theatre production of "Portrait of the Artist as a Soul Man Dead."

"Portrait of the Artist as a Soul Man Dead," a play by Jake-Ann Jones, tells the tale of a tumultuous relationship between an African American father, who's a jazz musician, and his son, who's a painter. To create a musical backdrop for the story, Penumbra recruited internationally known jazz trumpeter Hannibal Lokumbe (formerly known as Hannibal Peterson), who provides his own interpretation as the play proceeds.
