SPEAKER: We're listening to MPR Journal, and Jim Bickal is on the line live from Detroit, from Tiger Stadium in Detroit, where Jim has been watching. The Twins win the American League pennant. Jim, it's got to be exciting.

JIM BICKAL: Yeah, it's pretty amazing here. The Twins, their wives, or at least a bunch of them, have just come into the locker room. Mrs. Blyleven blowing her now famous whistle and pouring champagne over pretty much everybody.

I think we all got doused a little bit there, but it's quite a scene. I was out on the field when they were all hugging each other and all over. It almost sort of brings a tear to your eye.

SPEAKER: How do they play, Jim? You know baseball, you follow it closely. You're a good critic. Do they play well today?

JIM BICKAL: Oh, sure. I'd say this last five games they've played as well as they've played all year and as well as you could expect any team in the playoffs to play. That's really amazed me that a team in this situation, they weren't expected to win the division, they're coming in here as big underdogs.

Most of them haven't been in the playoffs before. And they came in just calm and almost cocky that they could win this thing without any problem. And they just took it to the Tigers who seemed almost flat out there in comparison.

SPEAKER: Big celebration underway right now, I bet, huh?

JIM BICKAL: No, it's pretty amazing in there. Some of the players are just seem sort of overwrought with-- they don't know what to say. And some of them are just hiding out in the trainer's room to avoid the media crush, because they're just trying to collect themselves a little bit because it's a little overwhelming at this point.

SPEAKER: OK. Thanks, Jim. I know you've got work to do to collect tape and so on for Morning Edition tomorrow morning, so get back to work. Thanks for calling us.

JIM BICKAL: OK.

SPEAKER: OK. Win, Twins. Twins going on to the First World Series since 1965. And well, as you might guess, why lots of people are celebrating already, there's a big party. An official party is scheduled for nine o'clock tonight.
