January 7, 2011 - MPR’s Dan Olson profiles General Vang Pao, a key U.S. ally during the Vietnam War, who died in California at the age of 81. The military leader is described by admirers as a warrior chieftain of the 18 Hmong clans he helped lead. General Pao was a familiar figure in Minnesota, home to the country's second largest Hmong population, including some of his family members.
November 27, 2003 - MPR’s Elizabeth Stawicki reports that Gen. Vang Pao, a former Vietnam-era military leader of CIA sponsored forces in Laos and head of the United Lao Liberation Front made a stark change in his position by saying he'd support normalizing trade relations if Laos improves its conduct on human rights.
April 17, 1995 - Stephen Young, an attorney who was with the USAID in Vietnam and taught Vietnamese history at the University of Minnesota; and Steve Sherlock, a Vietnam combat veteran, former activist in Vietnam Veterans Against the War, and founder and president of Aid to Southeast Asia, discuss the Vietnam War and any lessons that can be learned from U.S. involvement. Young and Sherlock also answer listener questions. The end of April marks the 20th anniversary of the unconditional surrender of South Vietnam to the Communists. Helicopters evacuated the American remaining in Saigon as well as thousands of South Vietnamese.
