June 7, 2001 - Hubert Humphrey's former press secretary Norman Sherman told the audience at today's Mondale lecture that Humphrey's personality played a key role in his success as a Senator. Sherman remembered how Humphrey instructed his staff to be nice to their political opponents - key Southern senators angry at Humphrey for his support of civil rights.
June 1, 2001 - Northeastern Minnesota outdoorswoman and resort owner Justine Kerfoot died yesterday in Grand Marais. She was ninty-five. In the northwoods of Minnesota, everybody knows the name Justine Kerfoot. Her family bought the Gunflint Lodge nearly 70 years ago. Her 70 years worth of stories: the time she fell through the ice with her dog team; the time she lassoed a moose calf; the time her little son dropped a kitten down the outhouse - those stories are collected in her books, "Woman of the Boundary Waters and Gunflint".
May 25, 2001 - A Memorial Day special Voices of Minnesota featuring the stories of two war survivors. Dan Olson interviews World War II war prisoner and bomber pilot Richard Carroll from Eagan, and Sabina Zimering, the Polish Jew now living in St. Louis Park who evaded the Nazis with a false identity.
May 15, 2001 - PRONUNCIATION: Wing Young Huie (Huie = HUE ee, like dewey) Guards, metal detectors and locked doors at the new Ramsey Council Juvenile Detention Center in downtown St. Paul create an unmistakable impression of a secure facility. A permanent collection of huge black and white photographs of Minnesota's young people add a striking human dimension to the institution's walls. The pictures have been taken by Minneapolis photographer Wing Young Huie (HUE ee). For thirteen years, Huie who is a native of Duluth, has balanced his commercial photography business with his interest in documentary photography. Minnesota Public Radio's Dan Olson talked with Wing Young Huie about the images in the Detention Center, starting with one showing riders of all races and ages packed into a 21A Lake street bus.. A new permanent exhibit of Huie's pictures were unveiled today at the new Ramsey County Juvenile Detention Facility in downtown St. Paul. A private benefactor, not taxpayers, paid for the installation.

April 25, 2001 - Census numbers show most people who move to the Twin Cities settle in outlying suburbs. The pressure that trend puts on fringe communities for roads, sewers and schools is a hot topic among people interested in managing Twin Cities growth. Developers say the only way to accomodate the expansion is open up more land faster for housing. Metropolitan Council officials say more of the growth needs to happen in areas where services are already in place. People attending a meeting in Bloomington today (Wednesday) will hear three views of how to respond to the trend. Minnesota Public Radio's Dan Olson reports. {Buzzword collecters can add infill to their list. Infill is planning jargon. Sprawling metropolitan areas like the Twin Cities have lots of room for infill - space for growth in between existing structures. Cities and first ring suburbs, Metropolitan Council chairman Ted Mondale says, are embracing infill out of self interest as a way to keep and attract residents.
April 20, 2001 - A vast trade area from Canada to Chile is the vision of negotiators meeting in Quebec City this weekend. Establishing the FTAA or Free Trade Area of the America's is the ultimate objective for 34 heads of government .. including President Bush ... at the talks. A final agreement is still years away. Many Minnesota companies welcome the prospect of easier access to customers in South America. But skeptics say the deal benefits mostly big companies and their investors at the expense of workers. Minnesota Public Radio's Dan Olson reports.
April 6, 2001 - MPR’s Dan Olson profiles Cantus, a male vocal group from Minnesota that appears to have turned the corner and is headed for the big time. The twelve young men who form the group, have signed with a New York management company. The dozen vocalists, all in their 20's, have crisscrossed the country singing their blend of sacred and secular music. They give their season-ending concert tonight in Minneapolis before their next road trip.
