July 2, 2001 - Even supporters of the 3.5 billion dollar transportation funding package approved by the legislature and governor say they're disappointed it doesn't do more for roads in the state. The bill does provide a substantial one-time boost for mass transit in the Twin Cities. It delays for a year rebuilding of crosstown highway 62, and it prevents MNDOT from spending money set aside for a new Stillwater bridge on other projects. But transportation planners and lobbyists say the state is still a long way from resolving the on-going deadlock over long term transportation funding. Minnesota Public Radio's Dan Olson reports.
June 21, 2001 - Reducing the booking time is one of the most important features of the new Hennepin County jail. There are 330 beds in this new jail. The cells are 6 feet x 8 feet. The way people are treated in the jail would be called direct supervision, a jail guard will watch multiple rooms at once and the rooms are in pods. There are televisions, desks, and other things that will help reduce the tension about being locked up.
