April 1, 1999 - Heavy rain and snow are forecast across the Red River Valley for the next two or three days. The National Weather Service says the precipitation will prolong the flood crest in areas from Grand Forks and north by nearly a week. Grand Forks officials say they can handle the extra water, but in many rural areas north of the city people aren't as optimistic.
March 31, 1999 - The Minnesota House has approved legislation to allow law enforcement agencies to sell confiscated weapons. A Senate committee considers the proposal today. Many rural law enforcement agencies say selling the guns would mean cash they need to operate. Opponents say the confiscated guns should be destroyed.
March 31, 1999 - Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura spent much of the day in East Grand Forks. The Governor heard about the destruction caused by the flood of 1997, and saw the rebuilding still underway. The Governor left a trail of one liners, and a ray of hope for residents looking for financial help from the state.
March 19, 1999 - This weekend, Fargo Moorhead is celebrating the renaissance of a cultural icon. The Fargo Theatre has been restored to its 1930's art deco splendor. The renovated theatre also boasts one of the finest Wurlitzer pipe organs in the upper midwest.
March 19, 1999 - A North Dakota man today receives the highest Award given by the French government. France is making a special effort to recognize U-S veterans who served in World War One by naming them Chevalier of the National Order of Legion of Honor. Three Minnesota veterans will also be given the award.
March 18, 1999 - A Native American Cultural center struggling to get off the ground in Detroit Lakes is being evicted from the house it's using as a temporary office. City officials say it's an question of zoning regulations. But those who started the center say racism keeps them from finding a home in the community.
March 17, 1999 - Crop disease and low prices are taking a financial and emotional toll on farmers in the region. Many are struggling with depression. Lowell Nelson was a successful farmer near Moorhead for more than 30 years. At one time his net worth was more than a million dollars. Now, he's broke and for the first time in his life won't be working in the fields this spring. He's also getting treatment for his depression.
March 11, 1999 - The Moorhead Police Force will soon expand by a dozen. But The city is not hiring new officers, its starting a volunteer citizen police unit. As Minnesota Public Radios Dan Gunderson reports, law enforcement agencies across the country are finding new ways to use volunteers.
March 5, 1999 - Many Minnesota Sheriffs and Chiefs of Police are upset about a legislative proposal to eliminate part time peace officers. Supporters of the legislation say it will improve the quality of police forces. But some law enforcement officials in outstate Minnesota say it will have the opposite effect.
March 3, 1999 - The National Weather Service is out with an early flood prediction for Grand Forks and East Grand Forks. The first flood outlook to project river crest levels for the whole Red River Valley is due out next friday, but Grand Forks officials requested their numbers be released sooner.
