Jimmy Carter was an American politician and humanitarian who served as the 39th president of the United States from 1977 to 1981. A member of the Democratic Party, he also served as the 76th governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975, and as a Georgia state senator from 1963 to 1967. Carter made numerous visits to Minnesota over his career. He selected Minnesota’s U.S. Senator Walter Mondale as his vice-presidential pick when running for the presidency in 1976 & 1980.
Beyond politics, Carter is well known for his work with Habitat for Humanity and establishing the Carter Center to promote/expand human rights, earning him a Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
Carter was born October 1, 1924, in the small farming town of Plains, Georgia. He died on December 29th, 2024, at the age of 100.
