A year ago today, the US Supreme Court handed a victory to eight Ojibwe bands in the long, hard-fought 1837 Treaty rights battle. The decision returned traditional hunting and fishing rights to the tribes over a large section of east-central Minnesota. March 24th is now a tribal holiday at Mille Lacs: government offices were closed today, and hundreds of band members celebrated with a communal dinner and powwow.
