Frogs and toads have lived on earth for more than 100 million years. They survived whatever extinguished the dinosaurs, yet in our age, they seem to be vanishing. In a three part series beginning today, Minnesota Public Radio's Mary Losure examines this scientific mystery. It's a detective story in which the victims are frogs, not people--but people may have a big stake in the mystery's solution. Amphibians are sensitive indicators of environmental problems. If we can find out what's killing frogs, we may also learn if it will someday harm us.

In 2008, Minnesota's voters passed the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment to the Minnesota Constitution: to protect drinking water sources; to protect, enhance, and restore wetlands, prairies, forests, and fish, game, and wildlife habitat; to preserve arts and cultural heritage; to support parks and trails; and to protect, enhance, and restore lakes, rivers, streams, and groundwater.

Efforts to digitize this initial assortment of thousands of historical audio material was made possible through the Minnesota Legacy Amendment’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. A wide range of Minnesota subject matter is represented within this collection.
