Attorneys for the Mille Lacs band of Chippewa Indians repeated their claim today a 160 year old treaty is still in effect, giving them the right free of state rules to hunt, fish and gather on land off their reservation in east central Minnesota. Attorneys for Minnesota and some landowners argued the treaty rights were revoked by President Zachary Taylor in 1850. Today's comments were before federal judges of the 8th circuit court of appeals in St. Paul. Minnesota appealed a federal judge's ruling three years ago upholding, for the most part, the claims of the Chippewa. Minnesota Public Radio's Dan Olson has more.
