MARK STYLE: The camp was called the first step toward Indian resettlement of the Black Hills when it began four months ago. Dakota AIM says the hills legally belong to the Sioux tribes under an 1868 treaty.
Earlier this summer, Dakota AIM applied for a Forest Service permit to construct 83 buildings on the land, including schools and homes. Black Hills National Forest Service Information Officer Mary Sue Waxler says that permit request has been denied.
MARY SUE WAXLER: The applicant failed to show why that particular 800 acres of land was special or necessary or singular so that no other piece of land would suit his purposes. The second reason was that had we issued the permit, it would have meant that an area which is now used by the public for multiple uses was converted to single exclusive use. And that's something that the Forest Service tries to avoid doing.
MARK STYLE: The AIM camp is one of two unrelated Indian camps in the Black Hills. The Oglala Sioux are also occupying land to press their demand that the Black Hills be returned to the Sioux. This is Mark Style in Sioux Falls.
