MPR’s Dale Connelly reports on damage in downtown Minneapolis left behind from a violent storm that swept through Minneapolis on June 19th. Connelly describes broken windows and strewn glass fragments at IDS Center and the IDS Crystal Court.
Debris from the June 19, 1979, storm damaged 12,000 windows in the IDS Center. Thankfully, there were no injuries from the broken glass.
DALE CONNELLY: Apparently, there's quite a bit of damage at the IDS tower in downtown Minneapolis. Some glass has blown off of the top floors and has come down into the street. And it's also gone through the glass roof of the Crystal Court. A lot of glass littering the Crystal Court area inside, on the floor.
And also, in the street on the Marquette Avenue side, gravel in the street, which apparently came from the roof. Also, on one side of the building, the glass and a few of the revolving doors blown completely out. Four revolving doors there and three of them damaged.
The Oxford Properties people didn't have a comment, will not have a comment until they have a chance to survey the damage completely.
One security guard did say, it looked like there was thousands of dollars of damage, and I think that's probably a conservative estimate considering the amount of glass that's lying around. I'm sure they're going to have to replace quite a bit of it.
