We should be good enough to complete the last remark about Julie's peasants here. But your efforts to build a Grassroots organization or by course of 2 million members reminds me of something that generally go once said it's one of my favorite quotations. He said that France has never her true self unless she is engaged in a great Enterprise. That was true of France of any great nation here in America. We have all been Guided by that same sense of national purpose and what has made America the great nation it is today is that our people have always devoted themselves to Great enterprise. Enterprise is greater than themselves. These difficult times when World Peace depends so fundamentally upon the strength and the unity of America. You have joined together Democrats and Republicans support an office, which is bigger than any party. The office of the presidency of the United States and each of you has made and I know that each one of you is made of personal sacrifice. We further that great Enterprise. I realize from having truck to Rabbi course that Caravans of come all the way from California from states in the mountain states the Midwest the Northeast and I am very grateful for the fact that all of you have done this at your own expense because you believe in something I am particularly indebted to you for personal reasons, but others will follow me in this office beginning in 1977. When I shall have finished my term of office to which I was elected and those social president will thank you all of you in this group tonight and you're hundreds of thousands of colleagues Across the Nation for rallying behind the office of the presidency of his crucial time. Europe resisted under the most adverse and sometimes the unfair sort of criticism. You have never wavered. You have not lost your faith when many would like to see you do so and you have not quit when quitting might have been easier and you are not going to quit because we are going to continue until we went as long as you have this kind of strength and fighting for a cause you believe in a cause because in yourself, as long as America has this kind of strength we shall never fail to remain in Lincoln's were the last class the last best. Hope of Earth. I also want to express my appreciation for the tribute you're paying tonight, especially the members of The White House staff and others within the executive branch. The men and women you are honoring deserve the praise of all Americans for they are unstinting are often unsung and their service to the country service that most of them are under a great personal sacrifice and the your support for them and for the office of the presidency, you make it possible for all of us to carry out our responsibilities more effectively. And I know Rabbi course would not want me to have this personal reference and I do think that all of those with whom he has worked will appreciate it as I do. (00:11:20) Just very glad to be here tonight with all of you and I don't have anything really formal to say just a there is just one thought that I want to convey and I know that you've been sitting for a long time that's very very warm in this room. I do want to tell you though something. I believe really deeply and that is that throughout history, you know, if you really study history and if you think about it, it just takes a small group of people who are dedicated who are committed who believe in something and who have faith to make something happen of great historical importance and I really and truly believe that you are such a group in this year 1974. You are a small group, but you are I've noticed about your organization that I've never seen in my lifetime of being exposed to politics and that is That when you write to me, are you write to my parents are when you're your leaders people that who are organizing this organization speak one word that occurs over and over again is Faith and this is something that I have found very very beautiful. And I know that you are working hard because of something you believe deep in your hearts politics is an emotional game. You react to people in political life emotionally because politics is about people it's working for people and you put your faith in someone and so many times you lose Faith along the way your disillusion, but all of you have not only looked at issues rationally looked at this whole issue in perspective, but you have reacted with your hearts and you reacted to a man and you put your faith in him and you are speaking for A man on his behalf and standing up for him. And I believe that you have stemmed the tide in the country that you are doing a tremendous job. You're a small group but your vocal and most of all you have faith and you have conviction. So I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for what you represent in this country today. And I must add one last thing. I'm really proud to be standing here tonight with the members of my father's Administration who are represented here. One of the worst things that's happened because of Watergate is that the people connected with this Administration many of them have not gotten the recognition and have not received the attention that they deserve in the sense that they are really dedicated people and I have worked with almost all of them and have known them personally and a final group of Americans who love this country and her working for it. She just could not find and I My father is feels that he is very very lucky to have these men and women on his side. So, thank you so (00:14:26) much. I went one day to a luncheon addressed by Charles Kettering boss can't he was called the inventive Genius of General Motors who invented the Delco battery in your car. If you have the right kind of car and he was past 80. He addressed his luncheon. His mind was in overdrive. It was going great. He used the word thermodynamics being an engineer as he was. He said, I don't know what thermodynamics means. Somebody told me. It means if you want to push anything, you must be going faster than it has. I think you're going faster tonight. I want you to keep that speed (00:18:25) up. You're going fast you're going faster (00:18:32) than whatever it is. We're pushing let's keep pushing. I have a sign on my desk has been on my desk for 25 years. I guess wherever I've had a desk it says there they go. I must hurry and catch up with them for I am their leader. Tonight Tonight Rabbi Corp, we have trouble catching up with you. He's way out ahead of us. But let's keep up with him. Here's a man with some imagination a man with vision. It has got it on him a group of people that are fired by a keen patriotism a keen desire to preserve the kind of America. We want a keen desire to preserve constitutional government. These are difficult days. These are days when the history of bad dominates the news. I just picked up the morning paper, for example, and I saw here inquiry. Here's something about house Judiciary committee's testimony mandolin, Maryland here corruption in Maryland's prison the church supported on a war footing the study of insurance values. Is he how bad that you're getting gypped? The Bomb Blast rocks the Tower of London. I look through this as he was there anything good in this morning's paper. I only had the first section there may have been on the sports page. I don't have it here. The matter of fact, this is a particular paper the other day. I heard Julie a little ledge and going around that when your father was in the Mideast that he walked on the Red Sea the UPI reported it Nixon walks on Red Sea AP reported it Nixon walks on Red Sea Washington Post reported. Nixon. Can't swim. There is a history of good being written in America day by day. It's being written by all of us. It's been written by 210 million Americans. We need somebody to articulate that history of good. It's often Lost In the Shadows of the Bold headlines that proclaim the history of bad. It's often. It doesn't meet the competition for 90 seconds on the Evening News Network, but there is a history of good being written. It's been written by this Administration. It's being written today that's articulated. (00:21:08) There are too many (00:21:09) Americans who forget tonight. That's six years ago half a million of our young men were in uniform the other side. The world are home (00:21:17) tonight. There are there are too (00:21:23) few. There are too few who recognized the important fact that last month for the first time in 25 years our high school graduating young men could plan their careers without facing a draft the first time in 25 years. (00:21:43) There (00:21:43) are too few there are there are too many who have forgotten. That this President opened up the door to 1/4 of the world's population in China and to the world's second most powerful Nation until we now have the taunt with those and have built the most lasting and brought us basis for peace in this world. I have known in my lifetime (00:22:12) coming home. There are too (00:22:14) few. Who appreciate the fact that for appointments to the Supreme Court by mr. Nixon has turned that corner on emitted a constitutional body instead of a (00:22:23) social reform agency? (00:22:31) There are too few who recognized that tonight with all the Wailing about this country. We have the highest level of peacetime employment in the history of this nation at the highest wages in the history of this (00:22:42) nation. I can go on and I can go on and list (00:22:48) that I say it does our heart good to see this kind of enthusiasm visibly expressing faith in America visit been expressing faith in our constitutional form of government and in the presidency and in a great president who occupies that (00:23:02) but I'm the Toastmaster the total Carmen said (00:23:11) We have a very delightful person who will appear here. The president has no supporter that matches this guy for backbone for Moxie for colorfulness for wit and the ability to drive home his own enthusiasm and determination that this President shall stay in office. (00:24:37) And (00:24:44) and let me tell you his marvelous wife Miriam a bus is out there on the hustings just like early as speaking up for what they believe in and what you hear tonight believe in I want to say a just a word about two other people here my dear friend oath will brand my neighbor. Well texas-style. He lived only 60 miles away over Brad. Opal and I have worked in many good causes together and so has his wife but we both feel that we have never worked in a cause more meaningful in this to this country than the one that brings us all here tonight. I want to talk now. about a new friend It said that out of adversity comes new strength and out of this time of trial has come to me a great new source of strength to me personally to my beliefs. And that man is the one on my right Rabbi korf who has to be one of the most remarkable leaders of this time and thank God he came at this (00:26:03) time. (00:26:18) I appreciate so much. But all of you have done what these at the head table have done to to be here despite very busy schedules because they believe as you do you've come in buses and planes and jalopies from every state in this Union. I want to particularly say a word. Let me be an auntie chauvinist and speaker worried about the women because I know myself that often it takes special sacrifice. dedication from women to give their hours and time and thought to a cause such as this and so whether you are primarily wives and homemakers and supporters of wonderful husbands, like our Pat Nixon or whether you're working women like our Julie. Let me pay you special. Thanks for arranging those meals and for the kids and for standings with your bosses and let's say thanks to those husbands and families back there who enables you to (00:27:27) come? (00:27:37) If I were asked to choose. a single word to distill the greatness of America. I would choose the word that you have chosen for this cause fairness. It has some Splendid synonyms Justice even-handedness equality. Because fairness is what made this country great and unique at its perilous birth. That revolutionary concept that all citizens were equal and the eye of God and government and law. That every baby born in America could claim the most precious Birthright in all Mankind's history the birthright of inalienable rights, which would be fiercely fairly guarded by a constitutional government. Now almost 200 years later even a great word like fairness is often distorted In the Heat of emotion in the bitterness of divisiveness of this era in this crackling atmosphere, too often people fall into the Trap of considering his fair only that which goes their way or reflects their point of view. It is to your credit. That despite your zeal. And perhaps even because of it you have not fallen in to this Pitfall of a distortion of fairness, you are not asking that the water re gated related incidents be whitewashed or swept under the rug neither is the president you seek the true fairness that would allow the Constitutional processes set forth by our founding fathers to be carried forth without prejudice. You ask not that the media be stifled. But rather than it be objective that it's separate news from commentary that it represent a broader structure. Mm of you opinions that it avoid the double standard of demanding that a president reveal his most confidential conversations while at the same time insisting that journalists have the right to Total (00:30:03) confidentiality. (00:30:24) Total confidentiality they claim with their quote reliable sources and (00:30:30) quote. (00:30:36) You asked not that news of the impeachment process be suppressed. But rather that you D Judiciary Committee hearings be open to the public so that it's full scope of activities can be seen and heard by the American people instead of being fed to them drop by poison drop in selectively leaked charges and (00:30:55) innuendos. (00:31:07) U.s. Not that the impeachment process itself be stopped but rather that it be conducted in a non-partisan manner free of such irresponsible partisanship as was exhibited months ago before one line of evidence had been read before one word had been heard from Witnesses by certain Democratic members of the Judiciary Committee (00:31:32) who were calling for impeachment. (00:31:40) And as evidenced earlier this week such partisanship as exhibited by Democratic National chairman, Robert Strauss when he claimed the case against the president was so devastating and overwhelming it that it would be incredible if he were not impeached you ask not that the special prosecutor be removed, but rather that he cracked down on the abusive tactics of harassment and character assassination practiced by some members of his staff. And you ask not that certain autocratic Chieftains of organized labor Chieftains who do not speak for millions of good hard-working American men and women who are union (00:32:27) members. (00:32:36) That these men abandon their long-standing ties to the Democratic party. You do not ask that but rather you ask that they separate a constitutional process from their partisan political drive for a veto-proof (00:32:50) congress. (00:32:59) You asked for fairness. Not only for this president at this time, but for all presidents in future (00:33:07) time. (00:33:16) I know that you will all be intensely busy in the next days here. But I hope that when you feel like restoring your inner confidence and faith that you may have a chance to visit some of the national shrines here. Even if you've been before there are real reminder of the strength of the endurance of our country. They reflect our country's past they offer us a very bright glimpse of the future many of them speak of fairness of Justice above the Supreme Court building. We are reminded Justice the guardian of Liberty at the Lincoln Memorial from his second inaugural address that address of another great president sorely persecuted in his own time comes the biblical admonition judge. Not that ye be not (00:34:16) judged. (00:34:27) High above Pennsylvania Avenue etched on an outer wall of the justice department are words which may not be so familiar in themselves. But who Spirit you reflect in all you do? It says justice in the life and conduct of the state is Possible only as first it resides in the hearts and souls of the citizens. You have found fairness in your hearts. You are here at Great sacrifice working to raise fairness in the consciousness of other Souls, you will be Victorious (00:35:08) and generations. (00:35:15) And generations from now your descendants still living under a strong co-equal unimpaired president still leaving under freedom and fairness will bless you and in January of 1977 millions of Americans alive today indeed millions of people around this world who yearn and ache to keep the peace that a man has built even Americans who made tonight revile you or sincerely Miss understand. What is at stake will bless you for what you have done. To keep a great president fairly elected staying on the summit so that he may fairly complete a mission splendidly begun. And referred to the monuments of Washington. One of my favorites is the Jefferson Memorial down you're on the Tidal Basin Memorial to our third president in my book. Perhaps the greatest of all Americans he certainly is among the greatest of all Americans inscribed in the Rotunda of the Jefferson Memorial is one of his great writings. Britain in January written in 18 in July 1807 six months before he assumed the presidency. It says I have sworn upon the altar of God Eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man. I think Jefferson was not referring to the tyranny of Kings. I think he did not refer to the tyranny of despots are dictators. I think he referred to the tyranny of (00:37:53) ignorance. I think I think he referred (00:38:03) to the tyranny of superstition. I think he referred to the tyranny of prejudice. I think he referred to the tyranny of untruths. Those are the tyrannies that are rampant in this land tonight at the tyrannies we fight and I know of no firmer fighter against those tyrannies and Senator Carl Curtis who has vigorously (00:38:26) spoken against them, Senator Carl Curtis. We are here to defend President Richard am Nixon who has undergone day prolonged trial by press and who has received harsher treatment in reference to his income taxes than any other citizen in the (00:40:38) land. Daniel Ellsberg goes (00:40:53) scot-free (00:40:58) Ellsberg the man who in time of War stole government secrets and gave them to the enemy is allowed to go scot-free. And he is the hero to many. This is the scandal of (00:41:17) Watergate. (00:41:29) John Dean who by his own admission violated several laws and he's a self-confessed embezzler of money that make to take a honeymoon. Relaxes out. He's in a hundred thousand dollar home. the Ervin committee engages in a cover-up According to Victor I sell the urban committee has bottled up the replies of some 220 labor unions which relate to unlawful political contributions. That committee has made no move to confirm the accuracy of those replies. An announcement was made an announcement was made that there will be no hearings and the committee counsel Samuel de said there is an issue of privacy here. The same law that prohibits Corporation campaign contributions prohibits labor union contributions. The campaign gifts from corporations are a small fraction of the contributions made by (00:42:57) unions. The Senate (00:43:04) Watergate committee is guilty of a cover-up of these (00:43:08) violations. (00:43:17) Now Democratic members of the House Judiciary Committee have made no denial of the fact that in the elections of 1968 70 and 72. They received 284,000 36 dollars and Thirteen Cents in campaign contributions from organized labor. Vfl CIO is the chief mover for impeachment yet that committee refuses to disqualify itself. Chairman rodino never denied that he received 43230 six dollars and twenty-six cents. Just who are the presidents accusers? The AFL-CIO the American civil liberties Union and Ralph Nader's Congress watch. end of the quote and the Christian Science monitor says the AF of L is fighting and intense organized and bitter battle for immediate impeachment of Richard Nixon. A number of continuing the quote from the Christian Science monitor a number of members of Congress conceived privately that they are feeling the pressures from laborers political forces back home into the quote. The Press reported that the American civil liberties Union had a battery of telephones located in Washington busy making calls to drum up support for impeachment. Ralph Nader's agents have used that taxpayers paid for Congressional telephones to call all over the country to stir up impeachment sentiment. The American people have a sense of justice. I am convinced that the majority of them are for President (00:45:32) Nixon. (00:45:44) I do not believe that the House of Representatives will vote impeachment because they will reflect the opinion and Judgment of the majority of the American people. That gift Nixon crowd are losing its (00:45:59) battle. (00:46:08) They are desperate and that's why they're making an all-out Drive. The press report AFL-CIO cracked lobbyists and Rouge a millimeter Bill Maher D Miller as saying quote when the timing is good then we will make an all-out lobbying effort on Capitol Hill end of the quote. President Nixon's accusers have failed to produce any hard evidence proving the commissioned by him of high crimes and misdemeanors which would constitute the legal basis for an (00:46:45) impeachment. (00:46:51) We must guard against deception that would mislead the public and the Congress the Wisconsin State Journal. Reports that are Li chard associate director of the American civil liberties Union has said and I quote impeachment does not require that the president have violated some law but can merely consist of serious abuses of the public trust into the quote. This is not the (00:47:23) law. (00:47:29) the New York Times reports that John Isaacs the spokesman for the American Democratic. The Americans for Democratic action is said and I quote. Listen to this our job now is a major educational campaign on the theme that it is a vital process that allows the president his day in court into the court think of that he ception are picturing the whole impeachment drive as something to help the president to give him his day in court. My friends are President carries the greatest burdens of any human being (00:48:21) on Earth. (00:48:30) Are we to say that he who carries the greatest burdens? Shall have the least rights of all. Our job is to see that those great enduring American principle. A presumption of innocence and that guilt must be proven Beyond A Reasonable Doubt shall not be (00:48:56) destroyed. We looked at people like you here tonight. And literally tens of millions of other Americans who share our view in our dedication. To this noble experiment. We call America to make sure that this will always be the home of the brave and if we can always keep it the home of the brave. Then we are confident. It will ever be the land of the free my friends in closing. Let's give a rousing hand to a great American who believes that this is the home of the brave and accident Rabbi (00:52:09) Court. This is the giant media. The giant Media made an investment in impeachment and now they are trying to protect their investment their power and profit and (00:53:55) credibility. How some government officials stand in awe? of the so-called fourth estate and frankly the look upon the media as the first branch of government second branch of government third branch of government and fourth branch of (00:54:39) government. And this (00:54:46) fourth branch of government is holding captive the other three branches of government from the (00:54:53) Judiciary to the legislator Judy executive. Hey Gazoo, the (00:55:07) First Amendment for themselves and deny it to the (00:55:11) people. (00:55:18) Never ladies and gentlemen have BB ever been faced with such a serious challenge. I talked to them freely. And I tell them what is on my heart. What is on my mind? They are determined. to he play the Alger Hiss case at that time. Do you use the rifles against Congressman Nixon now, do you use cannons against President Nixon for Daniel (00:56:02) Ellsberg? (00:56:15) They are bitter. They are Savage and now without conscience. Oh, yes. There are some exceptions. today the New York Times I had two little item beginning about our citizens Congress in which they say. Who is toward peace to this nation in the world?
