Minnesota U.S. Senator Walter Mondale says if he makes a presidential run, he will not allow his campaign to interfere with his senatorial obligations to Minnesota.
SPEAKER: There are a few ground rules that I have. Number one, I'm not going to let my responsibilities to Minnesota slip. I've been elected to represent the State of Minnesota, that's my basic job, and I insist on continuing that. And I'm going to explore the possibility of running for president, only on the condition that my first duty is to the state.
I have been encouraged by what I've heard around the country during my months of traveling. And this additional money will permit me to step up my activities and make a more intelligent judgment about whether I should seek the presidency. If I decide to do so, which I assume is a decision I must make within, say the next year, I will make a public announcement of that decision.
