March 23, 1998 - At the Academy Awards tonight, the odds-on favorite to win best picture and possibly set the record for winning the most awards is Titanic. $200-million film about the great ship that struck an iceberg is now the biggest grossing film of all time. Thomas Pope, a local screenwriter who's out with a new book called Good Scripts, Bad Scripts says Hollywood would probably like to see a money-maker rewarded with the industry's highest honors: Thomas Pope is the author of Good Scripts, Bad Scripts. His screenwriting credits include "The Lords of Discipline" "FX" and "Someone to Watch Over Me."

"Conversations about Hannah" is the story of Janie, a young woman who's trying to get her grandmother to tell her stories about family members she never knew. First-time playwright Ann Schulman drew on her own family's history as Jewish immigrants living on St. Paul's West Side in the 1930's.

March 17, 1998 - Resort owners in the Northwest Angle of Minnesota are fed up with Canadian fishing regulations and the U-S's lack of response to their concerns. So fed up, in fact, that they're threatening to secede from the United States and join Canada. The Northwest Angle is that little notch of territory on the top of Minnesota. Thanks to a surveyor's error in 1775, the Angle is part of the United States, even though it's attached to Canada on one side, and otherwise surrounded by Lake of the Woods. The problem, say resort owners, is Canada won't allow people staying in Northwest Angle resorts to keep fish caught in Canadian waters. That's bad for businesses that depend on anglers. The one hundred or so residents of the Northwest Angle have one powerful ally in their quest for fishing justice... Minnesota 7th District Democratic Congressman Collin Peterson. Peterson's planning to introduce a bill in the next couple days that would allow the Northwest Angle to secede:
March 16, 1998 - The Guthrie Theater announced its new season this evening. Artistic Director Joe Dowling selected seven plays ranging from "The Magic Fire" a new play by Lillian Garrett-Groag, to a new adaptation of "The Venetian Twins" which transplants the 18th century Italian comedy to present-day Minnesota. The seaon will also include classics like Oscar Wilde's "The Importance of Being Earnest," "Summer and Smoke" by Tennessee William, "A month in the country" by Turgenev , Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" and Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar:"
March 11, 1998 - David Logan is a law professor at Wake Forest Law School in Winston-Salem North Carolina. He says the tobacco attorneys' request for a new judge mid-trial is pretty unusual.
March 10, 1998 - Minnesota lawmakers might be able to again accept food and other favors from lobbyists. DFL Representative Tom Rukavina of Virginia inserted a proposal into a state government spending bill to allow lobbyists to spend up to $5 on legislators. State Senator John Marty, who wrote the 1994 state law preventing elected officials from receiving anything of value from lobbyists, strongly objects to the change. But Rukavina says one of the consequences of the ban is it's cut off regular people's access to their lawmakers. He says legislators rarely turn up for meetings sponsored by high school or community groups anymore.
