January 1, 1999 - It looks like a hospital in Boston can claim the first baby of 1999 after all. Earlier a Jacksonville, Florida hospital said it had a baby born at one second after midnight -- Boston's was two seconds after. But now, the Florida hospital says the baby was born one minute after the new year began -- and not one second. December 30, 1998 - Governor Arne Carlson appointed Rice County attorney Jeffrey Thompson to the Third district bench in Winona today. The name Thompson may ring a bell. His father, T. Eugene Thompson was convicted of murdering his wife, Carol in 1963; one of the most sensational murders in Minnesota history. Thompson was convicted of hiring a hit man to kill her so he could collect the million dollar life insurance policy. He denied any connection with the crime, but spent almost twenty years in prison. December 14, 1998 - PLAYLIST!!!! United States Satellite Broadcasting, a four-year old company based in Oakdale, announced today it's selling out to a larger rival. Hughes Electronics, which owns DirecT-V, will buy U-S-S-B for an estimated 1-point-3 billion dollars. U-S-S-B provides movies, pay-per-view channels, and programming to DirecT-V subscribers, and is considered a pioneer in the direct broadcast satallite industry. Founder Stanley S-Hubbard -- of the Hubbard family that owns K-S-T-P -- says being part of Hughes will align them with the leader in the field.
December 7, 1998 - The city of Minneapolis has pulled all 32 vans similar to the one involved in the fatal Holidazzle accident Friday night. Two people were killed when the Police Department's Detox Van plowed into the crowd. Nine others were injured, four remain hospitalized. The state patrol is investigating the accident, and asking people who have experienced acceleration problems with Ford Econolines like the Detox Van to contact them.
