December 5, 2001 - State Finance Commissioner Pam Wheelock told nonprofit organizations today they aren't being singled out for budget cuts. Wheelock discussed the state's nearly two-billion dollar shortfall to a frustrated group of nonprofit representatives. Many feel they're at the front of the line for cuts, after Wheelock's decision to temporarily freeze all new state grants. Minnesota Public Radio's Laura McCallum reports.
December 3, 2001 - When Minnesota's latest revenue forecast comes out tomorrow, many legislators expect it to show a budget deficit of at least a billion dollars. Some say it could be as high as 1.3-billion dollars. The size of the shortfall has prompted some finance experts to say Governor Ventura should call a special session soon to deal with the problem. November 29, 2001 - MPR’s Laura McCallum reports that while it is too soon to tell if extending taxes to services will be a major component to Ventura's financial recommendations, he may revive his plan. The response to the idea from Legislature has not been favorable and they are being vocal about it.
November 28, 2001 - Pam Wheelock, finance commissioner, told government not to get into contract agreements with non-profits. It is a matter of combatting a deficit in the budget.
November 21, 2001 - Governor Ventura says that Minnesota is well-prepared for a terrorist, but after reviewing its policies after September 11th, a few changes are recommended. Ventura says that there are three things that terrorists need in order to be successful: money, identification, and information.
November 19, 2001 - Half of the members of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees went to polling sites around the states last week. 82% of those who voted supported the contract.
November 15, 2001 - State Senator Becky Lourey (LORR-ee) officially entered the 2002 governor's race today (THURSDAY). The DFL'er from northern Minnesota says she's running for governor because the state needs a leader, not a celebrity. Governor Ventura hasn't said whether he's running for a second term. A year before the election, Lourey is the first Democrat to formally announce a gubernatorial bid, but she won't be the last. Minnesota Public Radio's Laura McCallum reports...
