June 8, 1999 - A new study by the Annie Casey Foundation shows that while fewer American teens are giving birth--the numbers are a mixed bag across racial and ethnic lines. AND--while MANY of the nation's largest cities have recorded a drop in birth rates among teens, the rate change in Minneapolis is less impressive than that of many big cities.
June 2, 1999 - City officials in Golden Valley shut off the water to a local motel after sending repeated notices to settle old bills. Once the water was shut off, motel management had to turn guests away -- MANY of whom were clients of a homeless shelter run by sharing and caring hands in Minneapolis.
June 1, 1999 - Democrat Senator Paul Wellstone gathered a group of community leaders in Minneapolis today to discuss the impact of domestic violence on children. He's seeking information for legislation he's proposing to help reduce children's risk of becoming violent themselves--when they witness abuse at home.
May 20, 1999 - In about 18 months the Metro-area will have two more area codes.
April 16, 1999 - In his first 100 days in office, Governor Jesse Ventura has prided himself on speaking his mind. But sometimes speaking his mind has gotten Ventura in trouble. On several occasions, critics have said the governor's comments reflect a lack of sensitivity on issues pertaining to single mothers and minorities.
April 2, 1999 - Black leaders of dozens of organizations and churches are calling upon people to participate in a planned March for Freedom, Justice and Equality tomorrow. The march was planned out of concern over Governor Jesse Ventura's recent cabinet appointments. Critics say the state's top administration officials fail to represent the diversity of Minnesota's population. Black leaders are ESPECIALLY concerned over the lack of any African American appointments.
March 30, 1999 - The House has approved a bill ending auto emissions testing on older cars in the Twin Cities.
March 19, 1999 - A House Committee approved a bill today that would let voters decide whether or not they want casino gambling at Canterbury Park racetrack.
March 18, 1999 - Hundreds of non-profit leaders spent MOST of the day at the capitol today to asking lawmakers to restore more than 60-million dollars in cuts proposed by Governor Jesse Ventura.
March 17, 1999 - A bill that would have toughened the state's drunk driving law appears dead for the session. That is, unless it's authors--taken by surprise today when their bill failed to pass a house committee--can find a way to REVIVE it.
