July 20, 2000 - Minnesota has gone from having some of the highest gas prices in the country to just about the lowest. AAA says the cost of a gallon of regular unleaded in the metro area today was a dollar-forty per gallon - 17 cents below the national average. Just a month ago gas in the Twin Cities cost a $1.84. Consumers are happy about the trend, but some industry analysts remain wary that prices could spike again. Minnesota Public Radio's John Bischoff reports.
July 17, 2000 - This is Future Tense for Monday, July 17th. Today: making high-tech devices safe for the highway. Some studies and plenty of ancedotal evidence suggest cell phones and other high-tech gadgets cause car accidents by distracting drivers. But researchers say much more data is needed to find out exactly how these devices distract drivers and how they can be designed to be more safe. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration holds a public forum on the issue tomorrow. Dr. Michael Goodman is an engineering research psychologist with the Administration. He says just making devices easier to use - for instance, designing speech-activated cell phones and dashboard maps - won't necessarily make them more safe on the road.
July 13, 2000 - This is Future Tense for Thursday, July 13th. I'm John Bischoff in for Jon Gordon. Today, is the world safe for internet voting? Arizona's Democratic Party made history in March when it held the country's first binding election allowing votes to be cast over the Internet. But a new report says that election was vulnerable to hacker attacks and vote manipulation. It also says the election failed to protect the secrecy of ballots. The Voting Integrity Project, a non-partisan non-profit organization, is suing Arizona's Democratic Party for allegedly violating the Voting Rights Act. VIP says the Internet is still a fundamentally unsafe space for holding elections. Organization Chair Deborah Phillips says most people don't know how to safeguard their PCs to the degree necessary to use them as polling machines. And she says the Internet itself holds threats:
July 2, 1999 - MPR’s John Bischoff visits carillonneur David Johnson at House of Hope church along Summit Avenue in St. Paul, as he prepares for July 4th concert. Johnson discusses the instrument and how to play it.
February 10, 1999 - High school students from Minneapolis and St. Paul are getting a crash course in African-American musical history this week at the Ordway Music Theater. About 100 teenagers who are probably more familiar with rap and hip hop spent a day learning about spirituals, civil rights songs, rhythm and blues, and singing songs that have played a central role in African-American experience.
