The end of apartheit brings hope, but also a new set of problems. September 25, 1997 - Minneapolis officials are relieved the city's murder rate is down. But people in the city's most crime infested neighborhoods are taking little comfort. The protesters at the mayoral debate earlier this week where tempers flared and the mayor's police security guard fired at a man suspected of assault are from the Phillips neighborhood. Some Phillips residents say the streets are still open drug markets with sellers and buyers doing a brisk business. Residents complain gunfire is rampant and police don't show up fast enough when residents call 911 to report drug dealing. Minnesota Public Radio's Dan Olson reports.
September 23, 1997 - There are conflicting versions of events that led to gunfire after a Minneapolis mayoral debate this morning. Minneapolis police say an officer who is the mayor's body guard was hit by a car and fired at the driver after the candidate debate. The driver was arrested later at his home. The driver's wife says her husband was trying to save her from a beating. Minnesota Public Radio's Dan Olson has more.

In the first half hour, a rebroadcast of reporter Dan Olson's Voices of Minnesota interview with the head of Catholic Charities of Minnesota, Rev. Jerome Boxleitner. In the second half hour a rebroadcast of the MPR documentary Loaves and Fishes, about a Duluth Catholic facility for helping the homeless.
