April 10, 1997 - MPR’s Dan Gunderson reports on how Fargo-Moorhead learned they had as little as 36 hours to raise dikes by two feet because the Red River could go higher than earlier predicted. Hundreds of people worked through the night in an effort to beat the clock.

April 7, 1997 - Rising water now covers miles of farmland in the Red River Valley. Even though reparations have been going on for weeks.... The flooding is so severe many rural residents have been cut off by rising water and unable to escape. Minnesota Public Radio's Dan Gunderson spent some time with Clay county deputies fighting the elements to rescue marooned families.

March 28, 1997 - The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says an increase in fishing license fees is critical to maintaining quality fishing in the state. The DNR wants to add three dollars to the cost of a fishing license. Frank Snyder is co-founder of the Minnesota Sport Fishing Congress. He says anglers will support higher fees..if the DNR uses the money more efficiently.
March 24, 1997 - Next week the Clay County Commission will consider Sheriff Larry Costello’s plan to put jail inmates to work. The sheriff has received support and a fair amount of criticism for proposing what he says has wrongly been dubbed a chain gang. Minnesota Public Radio’s Dan Gunderson reports.
February 18, 1997 - On its rail lines across the country Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad plans to increase train speeds through towns to sixty miles per hour. Many towns and cities now have ordinances limiting train speeds but the Federal Railroad Administration has given BNSF the okay to increase speeds. Some North Dakota communities are trying to put the brakes on the plan. Minnesota Public Radio’s Dan Gunderson reports.
February 13, 1997 - As state and local officials around the country struggle to comprehend the complexity of welfare reform they're watching each others efforts to see what can be learned. North Dakota is out front in one area, with a new system to handle what used to be Aid to Families with Dependent Children, or AFDC. Minnesota Public Radio’s Dan Gunderson reports.
January 27, 1997 - The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources wants to increase the cost of a fishing license. The DNR says the quality of fishing in Minnesota is at stake. but the chairman of a key legislative committee and some fishing groups says if the DNR wants to raise fees it must agree to be more accountable.
