August 6, 2003 - Tuesday night marked the first shift for 12 state troopers who've come to Minneapolis to help the city's police force handle a spike in violent crime. Half the troopers were deployed to the 4th Precinct in North Minneapolis, which has been the site of some of the most recent shootings. The deployment coincided with National Night Out and the troopers got a chance to see that even in one of the most troubled parts of the city, there are a lot of people working for change. July 8, 2003 - The closing of the Minneapolis Shriner's Hospital will be put off for at least another year. Last fall, the Shriners' national board of governors recommended closing the children's hospital. But on Monday, Shriners attending the annual convention held in Minneapolis rejected the proposal. Instead, they voted to accept a plan that seeks alternatives to closing the hospital. Minnesota Public Radio's Brandt Williams reports
July 3, 2003 - About 1500 members of American Mensa, the high IQ society, are in St. Paul this week for the group's 41st annual gathering. The group is open to people 14 and older who score in the top two percent of the general population on a standardized intelligence test. However, some of it's members say there's more to intelligence than a test score. Minnesota Public Radio's Brandt Williams reports.
June 20, 2003 - Starting July 1st bars and restaurants across the city of Minneapolis will be able to serve alcohol until 2 a.m. The Minneapolis city council approved the new ordinance in a near-unanimous vote. However, the measure only won approval after considerable debate. Some council members are worried about how the new hours will affect people who live close to neighborhood bars.
