August 1, 2000 - University of Minnesota officials said Tuesday that former basketball coach Clem Haskins has admitted making a three-thousand dollar payoff to a former tutor. U of M general counsel Mark Rotenberg says Haskins told NCAA investigators that he gave the money to Jan Gangelhoff, the woman who admitted writing papers for several basketball players. Though Gangelhoff said Haskins paid her -- and a U of M investigation pointed to Haskins as the source of the payment, the coach had denied the charges when the school conducted its own investigation. July 24, 2000 - Between 150 and 200 hundred protesters marched around downtown Minneapolis late last evening to voice their opposition to the International Animal Genetics Conference which started over the weekend. The march was noisy and protracted, and while there was a heavy police presence there were no arrests. The police say there were fewer protesters than they'd expected, but the demonstrators say they will regroup later today, and do it all again. Minnesota Public Radio's Brandt Williams reports.
July 20, 2000 - The Minneapolis police department's preparations for the International Society of Animal Genetics conference are designed, according to the authorities, to prevent a repeat of the WTO protests in Seattle. Police groups around the country have been adopting more proactive tactics since the Seattle demonstrations last November. While critics say this type of policing can infringe on the rights of protesters, police groups say this new way of dealing with large demonstrations will not go away anytime soon.
