November 11, 1998 - An early season winter storm left too little snow to open northeast Minnesota snowmobile or ski trails; but it did lift spirits of business people hard hit last year's mild winter. Minnesota Public Radio's Bob Kelleher reports: The difference between "El Nino" and "La Nina" could mean millions of dollars for Northern Minnesota. Last year "El Nino" brought dry pleasant and relatively snow-free conditions to Northern Minnesota. Climatoligists are predicting "La Nina" will produce the opposite, bringing much colder weather than normal and an extra punch of snow. October 1, 1998 - There are new ways to get in and out of Duluth this week. On Monday, American Eagle Airlines began non-stop flight service from Duluth to Chicago. Today Mesaba Airlines began three daily flights direct to Detroit. Both companies are offering reduced rate fares to launch the new services, and customers are delighted.
September 28, 1998 - Over the weekend the largest windfarm in the world was dedicated in Southwestern Minnesota, and started feeding electricity into the power grid. However if you want a smaller wind generator just for a house or a farm, you have to look further north. A Duluth company is one of only a half a dozen in the world which manufactures small wind generators intended to power single households. World Power Technologies is finding new markets for it's tower-mounted generators after riding a wild boom and bust cycle in the United States for 20 years.

While swimmers enjoy a comfortable swim in the usually frigid waters of Lake Superior, the conditions might help predict some troubling consequences should the region warm several degrees over the next decades.
June 9, 1998 - With President Clinton's signature now affixed to the massive transportation bill, two Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness portages become mechanized. Motor vehicles such as trucks will be allowed to pull boats across the narrow forest paths between fishing lakes. Now the US Forest Service will have to determine just how to allow trucks back on the portages and who will get to operate them.
May 25, 1998 - (AIR ON MONDAY MAY 25 - MEMORIAL DAY) Marching Bands, floats, and antique cars will make their way through West Duluth today for the annual Memorial Day Parade. The Duluth-Based Northwind Drum and Bugle Corps will be there. Once common; community-based Drum and Bugle Corps are few and far between. Members of the Northwind Drum and Bugle Corps are getting on in years, and worry whether they can muster enough healthy musicians to continue another season. May 20, 1998 - MPR’s Bob Kelleher reports on Obertstar-Vento compromise over motor use in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wildnerness. Northern Minnesotans hope the compromise will settle long standing disputes over the region. Congressman Jim Oberstar's proposal to allow trucks on two wilderness portages has been entered into the transportation bill now under consideration by a Congresional Conference Committee. It has Congressman Bruce Vento's reluctant support after the addition of a provision removing some lakes from motor access.
