June 15, 1981 - MPR’s Linda Peinovich interviews meteorologist John Graff, who describes the path and destruction of tornado that struck areas of Twin Cities on June 14, 1981. Graff notes it was a singular tornado that made a straight line through the metro.
January 28, 1986 - Live coverage immediately after the space shuttle Challenger explosion. The shuttle exploded during ascension about a minute after launch. Program presents various reports and sounds upon aftermath of disaster. This was the 25th shuttle mission, and first loss in space shuttle program.
July 17, 1986 - MPR’s Mark Steil looks back to the month of July in 1936, when Minnesota suffered through an oppressive heat wave. Steil interviews residents in southern Minnesota that endured the extreme temperatures.
November 11, 1986 - MPR’s Loren Omoto talks with William H. Hull, author of “All Hell Broke Loose: Experiences of Young People During the Armistice Day 1940 Blizzard.” Hull details the time period and recollections of those that lived through the storm.
July 24, 1987 - MPR’s Mark Heistad interviews meteorologist James Campbell about the storm that parked over the Twin Cities, bringing torrential rain and a tornado. Campbell describes it as a 100-year event.
August 7, 1991 - MPR’s Gary Eichten talks with the Lee Henry, mayor of Stockton, Minnesota, about getting relief after town was hit by flood waters. The mayor details how he “pushed” to get governmental assistance.
August 29, 1991 - A U.S. Forest Service official details the strategy of managing fires in Voyageurs National Park. The plan calls for addressing all human-made fires. Natural fires (ex. - lightning-started fires) are left to burn depending on the parameters.
