May 15, 1989 - Mainstreet Radio’s Rachel Reabe interviews Milton Raske, a resident of Pillager, Minnesota, on his astrological gardening system. He has been planting vegetables for decades based on astrological signs. Agricultural officials do not support moon planting as it is not supported by science, but that doesn’t stop Raske.
June 3, 1989 - MPR’s Mark Heistad reports on Hmong farmers in the Twin Cities area. Farming is a natural transition for Hmong immigrants settling in Minnesota. It is also an important factor towards independance and bonding of family.
December 27, 1989 - A Mainstreet Radio special from southwestern Minnesota town of Madison. MPR’s John Biewen presents a documentary entitled, "We're Not Dying," which highlights how the town survived the 1980’s farm crisis.
March 27, 1990 - On this Midday program, a presentation of a Mainstreet Radio report on rural Minnesota and the debate on how it should be viewed and described. Following report, MPR’s Bob Potter has a conversation with Paul Gruchow, local author and reporter; and George Donohue, a rural sociologist at the University of Minnesota about the differences between rural and urban Minnesota and answer listener questions.
May 9, 1990 - Mainstreet Radio’s Rachel Reabe profiles Steve and Deb Heuer, whose work as bovine sitters. The Minnesota couple are for hire to assist dairy farmers who are away from their farms for a period of time and need someone to watch, feed, and milk the cows.
July 13, 1990 - Mikhail Gorbachev, president of the Soviet Union, speaking with leaders in business and agriculture at the Radisson Hotel in Minneapolis. Following speech, Gorbachev answered audience questions. (Gorbachev’s speech and answers were translated) Dwayne Andreas, CEO of Archer Daniels Midland Company, chaired the meeting and introduced President Gorbachev. The meeting at the Radisson Hotel was part of Gorbachev’s one-day visit to the Twin Cities on June 3rd.
August 23, 1990 - MPR’s Donna Nicholson reports on visiting soviet farm managers touring the Minneosta State Fair. The group is studying American farmers stewardship of the land.
October 10, 1990 - MPR Journal’s Gary Eichten talks with former owner of Minnie the Cow (aka Minnie Moo), a white and black Holstein cow that is going to now roam Walt Disney World.
April 24, 1991 - MPR’s Mark Heistad interviews David Bedford, member of University of Minnesota’s Horticultural Research Center, who discusses a new breed of apple…The Honeycrisp. 1991 is inaugural release of apple to public and growers.
May 20, 1991 - Mainstreet Radio’s John Biewen visits La Paysanne, a sheep milk production company outside of Hinkley, Minnesota. The cheeses made from sheep milk include feta and ricotta. The sheep dairy industry in the U.S. is a small market and a tough business to succeed at.
