Minnesota has claim to a wealth of creativity; music is no exception. Almost every genre can be heard within our state’s borders. The results range from a simple act of joy, to an influence that reverberates far beyond (the “Minneapolis Sound” is a prime example). The collection below is an introduction to the diverse and talented artists who have called Minnesota home, and the art they share with all of us.
April 14, 2005 - MPR’s Karl Gehrke reports on the end of the Minneapolis chamber group Prospect Park Players. Gehrke interviews Prospect Park Artistic Director William Eddins and composer Randall Davidson about the seven year run of of the classical group.
April 29, 2005 - MPR’s Karl Gehrke interviews local jazz saxophonist Jeremy Walker, founder of the band Jazz is Now! Orchestra. Walker discusses the band and his love for jazz. Gehrke also interviews jazz saxophonist Ted Nash about group.
May 16, 2005 - MPR’s Chris Roberts reports on a new instrument, called a cleophone. Minneapolis inventor, Dave Krejci, talks about design of his new creation and the unique sounds it emits.
May 17, 2005 - Malena Handeen, a mother, farmer, musician and painter says she finds inspiration in the scenery around Milan.
June 2, 2005 - MPR’s Bianca Vazquez Toness reports on the growing influence of women in the Twin Cities hip-hop music scene. They call themselves B-girls. That's B for “breakdance,” and that's what some of these female hip-hop artists do, but others use verse, spray paint, and music to tell their story.
June 3, 2005 - MPR’s Karl Gehrke interviews Minneapolis saxophonist Pete Whitman about his love for the improvisation of jazz and the complexity of performing within a group.
